What is the SSDA?

SSDA stands for the Sector Skills Development Agency. This is the National Training Agency of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. It is the main organization that manages and coordinates Technical and Vocational Education and Training in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

What are the functions of the SSDA?

The functions of the SSDA are to:

(a) Prepare national policy on TVET to meet the needs of the country.
(b) Prepare plans for TVET according to national policies and economic needs.
(c) Monitor the implementation of agreed plans for TVET.
(d) Promote and Coordinate TVET in SVG.
(e) Approve and accredit Training Providers.
(f) Approve and certify courses to be pursued by persons desirous of obtaining Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

What is the role of the National Qualifications Department (NQD)?

The National Qualifications Department (NQD) serves as the secretariat of the SSDA. It carries out the work as sanctioned by the SSDA Board and works in close collaboration with other departments in the Ministry of Education as well as various Sector Bodies in Industry.

How can I be certified in my career/vocational field?

Through attending a full time or part time programme at the SVGCC, Technical Institutes, Adult and Continuing Education (ACE) skill training or through Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)

What is PLAR?

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition is the matching of what the individual already knows and can do with the performance indicators described in the national or regional occupational standards. Achievements are recognized by the award of the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ)/ Caribbean Vocational Qualifications (CVQ) or in some instances statements of unit achievement.

How can I enroll in a PLAR programme in SVG?

All applications for PLAR are currently handled through the National Qualifications Department (NQD). Interested persons will apply for programmes for which there are local or regional standards. Once the standards have been approved and there is a provision in place for that vocation by the NQD and the Approved Training centers, then the programme will commence. To enroll in a PLAR programme a person must have been working for a period of time in that particular skill area prior to registration. He/She may also be expected to show proof of earlier certification and training.

What is the meaning of CVQ?

Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ) is a regional qualification for persons pursuing training in various vocations based on approved standards.

How can I assess my levels of competence?

A self-assessment can be done using the CVQ standard along with a check list. The National Qualifications Department (NQD) or the Approved Training Center will carry out an interview to further determine the level of the candidate.

How portable (recognized) are the CVQs?

The Caribbean Vocational Qualifications (CVQs) are recognized throughout the Caribbean. It can be used in obtaining a Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME) skill certificate and can help one in gaining enrollment in further training and education locally and regionally.

Where do I fit in on the Regional Qualifications Framework?

The CVQ structure has several levels ranging from level 1 to level 5. A person at level 1 is a supervised skilled worker, Level 2 requires minimum supervision, level 3 is an independent worker who can supervise persons at the lower levels, level 4 is on the same level with a bachelors degree level or a technologist who can design and implement systems. Level 5 is at a postgraduate level and represents engineers and other professionals at the top who manage and monitor changes.

How long does it take to get a CVQ certificate?

After registration, the length of time is dependent on the levels, number of units, experience of the candidate and the ability to produce evidence to prove competency.
